Outlander. Making materials for the future

Welcome to Outlander Materials

We tackle waste by using it to create new materials that are compostable. Waste in, but not out. That’s how we get closer to our vision of a circular and sustainable future.

About Us

We want to eradicate waste, in every way possible. By using existing food industry sources, by-products, and waste to create our materials, and ensuring they are compostable and release no toxins. We have the dedication and knowledge to bring UnPlastic to the market as a real alternative for single-use plastics. Biotechnology, research, business acumen - everything needed to make UnPlastic not only an amazing product, but viable for large-scale commercial implementation. A true solution to the massive problem we face.

Who We Collaborate With

Circular doesn’t only describe our products: it’s who we are.
That’s why we decided to team up with the following initiatives:

BlueCity

Outlander Materials is based in BlueCity, a hub for circular entrepreneurs, in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. BlueCity connects entrepreneurs, researchers and other forward-thinking minds to help them realize their wild ideas and make a waste-free future happen. It houses successful startups like Rotterzwam, SuperUse Studios, Blue City Lab, Vet & Lazy Brewery, and Better Future Factory among many others.

BlueCity Lab

The BlueCity Lab is where we work. It is housed inside BlueCity and focuses on creating new materials. Located at the heart of BlueCity, it consists of a dry and wet lab that creates the opportunity to produce new materials on a cellular level, and develop them into functional materials like UnPlastic.

The goal of the BlueCity Lab is to speed up the development of regenerative materials that contribute to a circular economy.

Vet & Lazy Brouwerij

Vet & Lazy Brewery are our partners in crime in repurposing beer brewing waste. They are a young brewery located in BlueCity too, and give waste from their brewing process a second life. Like giving spent grains to care farms for feeding stock, and wastewater to us for creating our materials (like UnPlastic).

Want to Partner Up?

Currently we are in the proof of concept phase with our flagship product UnPlastic. We aim to design a product that can be scaled quickly and effectively, by iteratively developing UnPlastic so it fits the market’s needs.

To achieve this we are searching for partners within packaging, manufacturing and consumer goods companies to develop the product stepwise together.

By developing it in a lean and agile manner and continuously testing, our goal is to have UnPlastic market-ready within 2 years.

Want to become a pioneer in the Blue Economy? Partner up and make it happen!

Meet the Team Behind
Outlander Materials

Outlander is a team of passionate outsiders who are crazy enough to boldly pursue the vision of a world without waste. Our combination of biotechnology, vision, and business savviness, gives us the competence to create sustainable and scalable alternatives to single-use plastics. If we unite our powers, we can put an end to plastic waste!

Biotechnologist - Underground Beer Brewer - “Bioneer”.

Feeling responsible to build a more sustainable world, Lori founded Outlander Materials to address plastic waste. She studied biotechnology in the U.S., and advised circular startups on their scientific process. While brewing beer at home she hit upon the idea of UnPlastic, and since then has been on a quest to create better alternatives to single-use plastics. As the jack-of-all-trades spearheading her team, she makes sure Outlander Materials has all it takes to make the materials of the future. “I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer.” — Abraham Lincoln

Francois Schockaert: Master of Coin | Commercial development. Studied business engineering and holds a post-grad Masters in Finance from the Vlerick Business School. Francois combined 15 years working in corporate finance with a continuing passion for sustainability and governance. He focuses on the financial management of the company, while simultaneously serving as a sounding board for Lori on topics such as strategy and team culture. Born and raised in Belgium, Francois always enjoys contemplating life’s paradoxes over a cold beer.

Joost is a builder with focus on sustainable technologies. After finishing his Master degree at Nyenrode Business University, he has gained complex project management experience at ASML and continued with Business Development and building cleantech ventures. Similar to a previous GMP lab scale up to 2.5M revenue, Joost will be realizing the pilot production location of Outlander Materials and establishing first customer sales contracts. Setting up the existing R&D knowledge, processes, clients and team up for success in a high demand market.

Sander is completing his PhD candidacy in chemistry and materials sciences while working with Outlander. A researcher to the core, Sander executes the raw product and UnPlastic foil materials research. Everything from surface chemistry interaction to end product sheet properties, final quality, and migration testing. No detail is too small for Sander's eye, and with little tolerance for frivolity, he is there to make sure Outlander can back up each and every claim.

Harshitha is a biotechnologist with an extreme love for nature. Sustainability has always been her topic- especially when it involves replacing plastics. Having completed her masters in the Netherlands, Harshitha's motivation to employ biotech to solve today's problems brought her to Outlander Materials, whereas as a researcher her dedication to the very small, directly translates to a very big impact in reducing waste.

Marina is a biotechnologist and research associate with a passion for analytics. After finishing her Msc in Applied Biosciences and Biotechnology from the Imperial College London in the United Kingdom, she continued her research on proteins in The Netherlands. At Outlander she will be further researching and developing our biotechnology processes and bringing us one step closer to eradicating plastic waste.

Eliminating Waste
From Start to End

about-vision.jpg

“Captain Planet, he’s our hero, gonna take pollution down to zero!”

Ever since Outlander’s founder Lori Goff watched Captain Planet and the Planeteers save the world from pollution, she has felt the responsibility to do the same.

The answer of how-to came when she was brewing beer in her home kitchen, and discovered the possibilities of using beer waste to create new materials. Since then we, the Outlander team, have been on a relentless quest to make products that are not just made from beer waste, but also a real alternative to single-use plastics: versatile, non-toxic, and compostable.

So let’s combine our powers and together, take pollution down to zero!

The power is yours!

To have vision and clarity, you need to view the world from an Outlander’s perspective. Only then you see what is possible, and re-discover our world by pushing the boundaries.
